RECA honors John Cyrier with Community Service Award

Nov 14, 2019

Sabre Commercial is proud to announce that John Cyrier, our Managing Director and co-founder, will be the 2019 recipient of RECA’s Community Service Award for championing significant improvements that have directly benefitted Central Texas communities.

John actively serves Texas as the State Representative for House District 17, which includes Bastrop, Caldwell, Gonzales, Karnes, and Lee counties. RECA leadership said they chose John for his innovative and practical leadership on matters related to affordability, housing, and other quality of life issues that impact our region and our industry.

In his capacity as Chair of the Committee on Culture, Recreation and Tourism during the recent 86th Legislative Session, John led an effort that resulted in the victorious passage of Proposition 5 earlier this month. Prop 5 will appropriate revenue from the sales tax (6.25 percent) on sporting goods to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Association and the state Historical Commission, a decision that both hunters and conservationists can celebrate. The existing law allowed the legislature to allocate the money elsewhere, but Proposition 5 mandates stricter guidelines that will help keep the revenue flowing to the parks, wildlife and historical agencies.

John also championed the passage of two bills in May of this year, HB 2496 and 2497, which helped to improve local residential affordability and the preservation of private property rights. He served as a member of the Committee on Juvenile Justice and Family Issues, and as Chairman of the General Aviation Caucus, Vice-Chairman of the Rural Caucus, Secretary of the Energy Caucus and member of the Aerospace Caucus.

Historically active in the community, John was a founding board member of the Lockhart ISD Education Foundation. He is a member of the Lockhart and Bastrop Chambers of Commerce, and has served on the board of Caritas of Austin, Central Texas Food Bank, San Marcos Airport Commission, Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Austin Area Research Organization (AARO), and was a Precinct Chairman for the Caldwell County Republican Party. In 2017 John also joined the Texas State Guard where he has achieved the rank of Captain. His service also includes the Executive Boards for the Real Estate Council of Austin, Capital Area Housing and Finance Corporation, Greater San Marcos Partnership, and past Chairman for the Associated General Contractors of America’s Austin Chapter.

John Cyrier will be presented with the Community Service Award at the RECA Awards Luncheon on December 17th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the JW Marriott.
